Week 8: Materials Adaptation Reflection

Materials adaptation means matching materials with the learner’s needs, the teacher’s demands and administration’s purpose. To adapt materials we have to consider addition, deletion, modification, simplification and reordering.

I think that deletion is an important adaptation procedure. It involves removal of some of the extra and unnecessary activities in the textbook. Materials should be reduced through omission if learners are clear about a language point especially when they have been taught about that particular topic. As we know that English teachers do not have enough periods to finish the syllabus, so deletion really helps to save times.

My English teacher did reordering when I was in Form 2.  She taught us by arranging the sub-sections of the textbook in a different order or sequence. In my opinion, reordering or rearrangement of materials helps to make them comparatively more interesting and appropriate for the learner as well as the teacher.

There is no perfect material for learners. It must be not an outdated material, so that learners can learn and know about the current issues. As a pre-service teacher, I should be aware of matching the materials to the subject needs during materials adaptation.
